Why Filipino?
With the rise of foreign languages as means for education and globalization, our language indeed needs saving. Saving, in a sense that we are not to let it fade to the backgrounds of our society where in dwells what most people have forgotten such as obsolete traditions. There are numerous reasons on why we are to ensure the survival of our language. A particular article I have chosen, “12 reasons to save the national language” by David Michael M. San Juan, depicts several of the points I would like to put emphasis unto. One particular reason to save our language is that because it is written in the law that the Filipino language shall flourish throughout time alongside its neighbor languages within the country. Undeniably, this law was written to guarantee and ensure the survival of our languages. Perhaps, this is an order and command unto us to take specific measures to promote and maintain its use. Being members of the ASEAN, Filipinos also have to strengthen their understanding and competence with the national language that we may have a contribution to the ASEAN’s socio-cultural program. Filipino is also used as medium of instruction around the globe, therefore forgoing the use of the language and allowing it to decrease in use and quality will negatively affect the status of
Filipino as a global language.
